Summary: The Survey of American Indians and Alaska Natives (SAIAN) is one of three major components of the 1987 National Medical Expenditure Survey (NMES). (The other two components are the Household Survey and the Institutional Population Component.) The SAIAN was designed in collaboration with the Indian Health Service (IHS), and used the same data collection instruments, interview procedures, and time frame as the Household Survey component.
