Scope of Study

Summary:This National Master Facility Inventory data file is intended to provide a comprehensive list of nursing homes and related care homes in the United States in 1982. The criteria for inclusion were that a home maintained three or more inpatient beds and provided one or more personal care services (such as help with eating, walking, correspondence, dressing, bathing, or using the toilet) or supervisory care. The file contains the names and addresses of 26,817 such facilities along with characteristics such as total beds set up and staffed for use, number of beds certified by Medicare or Medicaid as skilled and intermediate beds, total residents, and type of ownership. Facilities that only provided services to the mentally ill or the mentally retarded are not included in this file. Each facility has a unique identification number that incorporates the Federal Information Processing Standards state and county codes for sorting and selection by state, county, city, or zip code.

Subject Term(s):assisted living, health care facilities, institutional care, nursing homes, patient care

Geographic Coverage:United States

Time Period:1982

Date(s) of Collection:1982

Universe:Nursing and residential care homes in the United States in 1982.

Data Type:survey data

Data Collection Notes:For hospital-based nursing homes, "type of ownership" codes do not correspond to those specified for the field in the tape documentation. (Hospital-based nursing homes can be identified by an "H" in tape position 6.) Imputed data were used for all hospital-based nursing homes and for other facilities in instances where data such as total beds, total residents, or type of ownership were not reported by the facility. The National Master Facility Inventory Survey of inpatient health facilities was first conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics in 1963 and has been done biennially since 1976.

Methodology

Data Source:Mail questionnaire. Facilities other than hospital-based nursing homes were identified through the Agency Reporting System. Hospital-based nursing homes were identified through the Health Care Financing Administration.
