Scope of Study

Summary:The total number of business establishments, mid-March employment figures, and first-quarter and annual payrolls are supplied in this collection at the county, state, and national levels. Also provided are data on the number of establishments by employment-size class.

Data Collection Notes:The United States Summary and the state-level data are contained in one file each. The county data are contained in nine files, with each file corresponding to a Census Division. There is one file containing Standard Industrial Classification codes.

Data Source:(1) United States Bureau of the Census economic censuses, the Annual Company Organization Survey, and Annual Survey of Manufactures, and (2) United States Internal Revenue Service Quarterly Payroll File
