Scope of Study

Summary:This data collection contains seven files of Canadian census and election data, each corresponding to a particular electoral period when the number of constituencies was fixed. The data files include returns from the federal elections of 1908 and 1911 and data from the 1911 Census (Part 1), the elections of 1917 and 1921 and the 1921 Census (Part 2), the elections of 1925, 1926, and 1930 (Part 3), the elections of 1935, 1940, and 1945 (Part 4), the election of 1949 and the 1951 Census (Part 5), the elections of 1957, 1958, 1962, 1963, and 1965 and the 1961 Census (Part 6), and the election of 1968 (Part 7). The election data include information on the total valid vote cast and the percentage of the total vote received by each of the major parties, including the Conservative, Liberal, Socialist, Labor, Independent, Progressive, CCF, Social Credit, NDP, and Creditiste parties, as well as a total for all other parties. The census data provide demographic information on religion, including Anglican, Baptist, Jewish, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Roman Catholic, United Church, and other denominational sects, and ethnic origin, including British, French, German, Italian, Scandinavian, Russian, Polish, Asiatic, Native, and others, as well as information on age, education, occupation, and income from the 1961 Census.
