Related International Data Sites
The online resources included on this page are essential to scholars and researchers working in the areas of international relations and global studies. While certainly not comprehensive, these resources have been chosen because they complement the international data holdings of the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR). The online resources have been organized by theme, but often overlap the different categories provided. Simply click on the name of the site to browse and access the myriad of data holdings housed within each group or organization.
Conflict Data
The James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS): The focus of this nongovernmental organization is the nonproliferation of weapons of mass destruction. Use the menu to the right of the page to access data.
Correlates of War (COW): Founded by J. David Singer (University of Michigan) in 1963, the COW project continues to collect data on the phenomenon of war. The original COW dataset, created by Singer and Melvin Small is housed at the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR). The link provided here allows access to more recent incarnations of the data. Use the links to the left of the page to browse and retrieve data.
Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI): The institute is committed to research in the areas of international peace and security and serves as a clearinghouse for international data in these areas. Simply use the link toward the top of the page to browse and access data holdings.
Terrorism & Preparedness Data Resource Center (TPDRC): TPDRC is housed within the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) at the University of Michigan. Data on international and domestic terrorism is available from this resource center.
Economic Data
Davidson Data Center & Network: Located at the University of Michigan, the William Davidson Institute provides data related to transitioning and emerging market economies. Simply use the links to the right of the page to browse and access data.
International Monetary Fund Data and Statistics: This portal will allow you to access a range of data including information about lending by the IMF, exchange rates, and economic indicators. Any of the links on this page can be used to access available data.
World Bank: Data & Research: As a source of assistance to developing countries across the globe, the World Bank provides data for its 185 member countries. Data ranges from economic to environmental. This link will take you to the data, research, and prospects page. A variety of links are available for data located within each category.
Electoral Systems and Behavior
Comparative Study of Electoral Systems: This site not only allows researchers to conduct cross-level and cross-national analyses of the effects of electoral institutions on citizen's attitudes and behaviors, but also enables researchers to analyze the presence of social and political cleavages. Use the links to the left of the page to access data.
European Election Studies (EES): The EES link provides information about participation and voting behaviors associated with the European Parliamentary elections. Data can be used to study political behavior and the evolution of the European Community.
Freedom House: Established in 1941, Freedom House conducts programs to promote democracy around the globe. Freedom House conducts annual surveys that measure countries' civil liberties practices. To access survey results, use the drop-down box labeled "Select a year" located in the middle of the page.
Lijphart Elections Archive: This site provides some of the most comprehensive election data for countries around the world. A menu of states is provided. Simply click on the country of interest to retrieve data.
Environmental Data
Health Data
globalhealth.gov: A department of the United States government, Global Health represents the U.S. government's policy on global health issues. A comprehensive menu to the left of the page can be used to browse and access data from this agency.
globalhealthfacts.org: Funded by the Kaiser Family Foundation, globalhealthfacts.org provides comprehensive data on global health issues. Use the interactive maps or menus to access their datasets.
United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF): UNICEF is an organization within the United Nations system that focuses on global children's issues. UNICEF collects and disperses statistics on the status of women and children across the globe. Use the menu to the left of the page to browse and access data.
UNAIDS: UNAIDS is a joint program consisting of all organizations within the United Nations system. The goal of UNAIDS is to provide information and assistance to the global community, especially those populations severely afflicted with HIV/AIDS. Use the link at the top of the page to access information and data about the global status of HIV/AIDS.
World Health Organization (WHO): This organization coordinates all activities involving health issues for the United Nations. Data sets include the following topics: risk factors, health systems, diseases, and mortality. Use the links on the left side of the page to access available data sets and statistics.
Human Dimension of International Relations
Central Intelligence Agency: This is the link to the Central Intelligence Agency's annual publication of country-specific information. To access data regarding a specific country, simply click on the drop-down box "Select a Country or Location" toward the top of the page.
Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations: This is the statistical portal for the FAO, whose mission is to raise levels of nutrition and standards of living around the world. Simply click on the name of the dataset of interest to retrieve data and statistics.
International Archive of Education Data: Housed within the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR), this site provides access to international education data. Simply access the data link on the menu to browse and access data.
Minorities at Risk: Housed at the University of Maryland, the MAR project has data on 284 active ethnic groups located around the world. Simply click on the "data" link on the left hand side of the page to browse and access data.
Population Studies Center: This link will take you to the Data Archive and Support page of the Population Studies Center located at the University of Michigan. PSC is a leading repository for population information. Simply use the links to the left of the page to browse and access data.
United Nations Statistics Division: UNSD serves as a depository for global information. Included in the holdings are environmental, economic, social, demographic, and geographic data. Using the various links located to the left of the page, data can be browsed and accessed.
United States Census Bureau International Data Base (IDB): Hosted by the United States Census Bureau, this database provides demographic indicators for 224 areas and countries across the globe. Links are very clearly identifiable.
World Values Survey: This organization is a compilation of social scientists from around the world whose work focuses on the people's values and beliefs. Data are available for more than 80 societies across the six inhabited continents of the globe. The Data Shortcuts on the left side of the page will allow quick access to data holdings.
